While a purist would agree that Scotch Whisky (note: no ‘e’ in whisky), does indeed ‘rock’, they would never enjoy it with more than a wee drop of pure water to help better express the aromatics of this complex spirit. Indeed, whisky is the world’s oldest spirit with the 1494 Exchequer Rolls of Scotland recorded a purchase of ‘eight bols of malt to Friar John Cor wherewith to make aqua vitae’ making this the first written reference to the production of Scotch.

 

There are 5 types of Scotch Whisky produced by nearly one hundred distillers in a country no larger than South Carolina, but only 2 are widely available in the US, Blended Scotch and Single Malt Scotch. Blended Scotch is whisky coming from different distilleries and of different classifications combined. In some categories, grain (corn, wheat, etc) neutral spirits and non-whisky blenders may be used as well.

 

Single Malt Scotch, a whisky distilled at a single distillery from water and malted barley without the addition of any other cereals, and by batch distillation in a pot still as opposed to a column still as is used in the vast majority of other spirits. This makes single Malt Scotch one of the world’s truly hand crafted products.
